Bangkok Getaway - A Taste of Thai

Author: Shaynon Lee

Hey peeps! I just came back from Bangkok, Thailand! Naturally, it's unacceptable for me to not blog about the beauty of Bangkok, especially about their FOOD, right? It was a shopping trip with Ms. Celine, actually, so food wasn't our priority, but we still got to eat loads!

View of the Pratunam Main Road from BTS Station! We were so excited!
Most of the food we had there were street food, but I thought they were incredibly delicious!

And here's the very first location of our food adventure, China Town:

China Town
We spent our first night in China Town. There were so many restaurants that were selling shark fin soup and abalone at considerably low prices (ranged from RM 30-100)! Apart from that, they offer a lot of seafood dishes too!

Anyways, here's the very first dish we had:

Tom Yum Gong Noodle, (50 bahts/RM 5)
This is the large portion; the small ones cost 35 bahts (RM 3.50) I believe. It was served along with glass noodles and fish balls. This is definitely one of the stops you have to drop by if you crave hot and spicy food! So fans of spicy food should never miss this dish right here.

Can you feel the love for spicy food from Ms. Celine's happy face?
As you can see from above, this is the gigantic pot they use to prepare and cook the Tom Yum Soup.
See all the chillis there? Imagine the spiciness!

Next day, we proceeded to the Pratunam Market:

Pork Satay (20 bahts/RM 2 per strand)

We stayed around the Pratunam area so it's just a short walking distance to the market. It's an amazingly big market. You would have to venture through the narrow alleyways to search for good food. I was told that the pork satay in Thailand is a MUST TRY and I had actually tasted one back in China Town it was easily forgettable. However, I found a BBQ stall in the market and tried this ---->

It's cost 20 bahts (RM 2) per stick but believe me; it was exceptional and worth every penny you're paying! Not only that the meat is savory but look at those layers of fat; they're tremendously chewy and juicy!

Okay, I know saying this may steer off those who're anti-oily foods, but hey, sometimes we just need to eat something nice and greasy, and this wonderful pork satay did it for me!

I bet Celine agrees with me!

Celine's smile and gesture says it all!
I'm sure you've heard that the durians produced in Thailand are a must try, so we bought one. It was wrapped up nicely and was priced around from 100-200 bahts (RM 10-20). We bought a pack as dessert after dinner, assuming there wouldn't be much flesh from the durian. Boy, were we WRONG!
The tropical fruit - Durian!
The durian seed was surprisingly tiny and sat comfortably in the middle of an ocean of durian flesh! It was satisfyingly sweet and served it's purpose brilliantly as dessert! I'm sure you can't judge it by sight alone but does anyone know what kind of durian this is?

Platinum Fashion Mall:

The Platinum Mall is a wholesale fashion shopping mall, a shopping paradise! Not just a paradise for girls, but I bet for guys as well! After a day of shopping spree, Celine and I decided to check out the food court on the highest floor to refuel!

We had to buy a prepaid card of sorts before making our orders to the individual stalls, the cards came in varying amounts so what we did was we scanned the area for our targets before buying the one that best match our estimation. Then all there's left to do was buying the card with the exact amount and order our food! The stall owners would swipe our cards on their readers and the amount would be deducted from our cards. A receipt indicating our balance will also be given. Neat, huh?

With that being said, here comes the food:

Red Tom Yum with Glass Noodles
Yeah, we went for another Tom Yum glass noodle, this time with red tom yum. But this tom yum wasn't as good as the one we had in Chinatown since it wasn't spicy enough for the both of us. We're both extreme fans of spicy food after all! But, the sour taste of the tom yum felt balanced with the spicy flavor so fans of Thai cuisine could very much enjoy this more than we did.

Fried Oysters Omelette
The egg was fried to a crisp and went exceptionally well with the fresh oysters, the raw bean sprouts were fresh and sweet along with a slight crunchiness! On top of that, the raw bean sprouts were refillable! There was a whole bunch of them sitting right in front of the stall for self service. However, some might not like them though as they have quite a strong raw taste, we enjoyed them nevertheless.

As good as the dish itself may be, having it together with the sauce just elevated the dish completely! The balanced mix of sourness and spiciness accentuates the aroma and taste of the oysters omelette!

After all that, I think it's time we have some desserts!
Durian with Sticky Rice
We highly recommend this to ALL durian lovers! The durian flesh swimming amongst the sticky rice and durian syrup is really quite a sight and beautifully dances on the palette, truly a dessert based on durian flavor! It's better to share though since it was quite a large serving.

Vertigo Grill and Moon Bar, Bayan Tree Hotel

The side view of Vertigo Grill and Moon Bar.
We spent the last night of our Thailand trip in a sophisticated sky bar located on the 61st floor of the Bayan Tree Hotel - the Vertigo Grill and Moon Bar. We were guided by a waitress and had to take a short walk to the top floor as the lift only take us to the 59th floor. They were mainly divided into 2 areas, the restaurant and the sky bar. We had our after-dinner cocktail at the sky bar, accompanied by the incredibly beautiful night view of Bangkok City. It was pretty windy up there, but still, extremely comfortable and no doubt an ideal place to chill out.

It is essential to make a booking so that you can be arranged to a table where you can enjoy the view. Otherwise, you might end up having a bad table like we did. We had to run all over the place to take photos of the Bangkok night sky and enjoy the view.

A lovely, beautiful night view of the Bangkok City. Sorry for the blurry quality though.

Bangkok Trip - Fear Factor Edition (DO NOT scroll down unprepared!)

As most of you are aware of, Thailand is famous for their... "Exotic food". If you're wondering what they actually offers and where to find it, here's some great examples for ya:

Quite a sight, huh?
This was a BBQ food stall located in one of the alley of Pratunam Market. Yes, they are frogs. On a stick. Roasted. We didn't have the guts to try this unfortunately... It totally isn't our cup of tea!

However, we did boost up our courage to try THIS:

Fried Grasshoppers (20 bahts/RM 2 per stick)
This was the only stall we found in Khao San Road night market that sold a variety of insects. Most other stalls only offer scorpions in different... Sizes, and price. This stall actually wanted to charge us for taking photos of the collection of bugs they offer so we didn't took any.

Anyways, about the fried grasshoppers! Despite the horrifying appearance, they were just crunchy and practically tasteless apart from the saltiness due to marination.

A kiss goodbye before it's being eaten by the omnivore!
The ending note: I went to Bangkok before I had the pleasure of being invited to join Foodie's Digest so sorry for the lack of photos and details, such as the actual locations and exact prices. My next post will be better, I promise!

Oh and here's a tip for those interested to visit Bangkok; bargain with the Taxi and Tuk Tuk drivers! The initial prices they offer are actually way higher than what you should be paying. Cheers!
