Opus Bistro, Bangsar - The Ideal Place for Music & Dining

We did not take this photo, but took it from Google as we forgot to take a photo of the menu.
Located in Bangsar, KL, Opus Bistro is an Italian restaurant serving traditional and new style Italian cuisine with a wide range of wine selections.

Due to a function held on the ground floor, we were escorted to the upper floor for our dinner - and we were thankful for the arrangement:

The guest room design.
A living room design, with a TV even! Not sure if it's working tho.
The wine cellar.
The bar & dining area.
The dining area and the awesome companions of the night! ;)
The interior design of this place is very relaxing, it may be simple but it's giving out a very warm and relaxing vibe when you're settling down for a nice, delicious dinner. The atmosphere is very welcoming, and we were very comfortable the entire time, feeling as if we were having the place all by ourselves.

There are also a few tables out there, specially designed for couples:

Couple Settings, there isn't any view actually, but it's still quite a good setup for those who prefer  quiet environment.
Now let's move on to the food & beverages:

Banfi Col Di Sasso Toscana IGT, 2009; a beautiful Italy ruby-red wine, with a little dryness and light tannin. A bouquet of  mixed berry and ending of cherry on the palette. Recommended by the manager.
Another shot taken by Ms. Sally
Wither Hills Sauvignon Blanc, 2008; recommended by the manager. Refreshingly dry and lightly sweet, with a bouquet of apple-citrus and herbs-lemon grass on the palette.
The red was a really good recommendation but the white was rather overpriced. While the white is decent but I can easily recommend one with similar quality at a much cheaper price range.

Opus' Special Seafood Antipasti Platter (RM45)
The 2nd serving
The seafood platter was decent; the scallops, clams and calamari are great but definitely not the prawns. It's small, lacking in freshness and texture. The 2nd serving simply made it worse; they're using a different plate for the calamari, which shows the lacking in standardizing. The calamari was also simply cooked as it is lacking the grilled color if you compare it to the 1st serving. Furthermore, the scallops are under cooked like the calamari and it's much smaller compare to the 1st serving.

The Best Cream of Mushroom (RM 22)
They call it 'The Best Cream of Mushroom' in the menu, we call it the flattest mushroom soup, the end.

Seared Beef Carpaccio, with Parmesan Cheese and greens (RM 25)
The best dish of the night. The beef was remarkably tender and juicy despite of being a carpaccio, while the sides & seasonings enhanced the flavors and texture, totally scrumptious! Ms. Sally and Mr. Turtle (Ivan) complained that the parmesan cheese are a little too flat, but Mr. Harrison and I think that it's just the regular. We love the dish nevertheless.

Deep Fried Soft Shell Crab (RM 25)
The usual ones. Satisfyingly crispy, fresh and flavorful. The dish was accompanied with sweet chili sauce, no complain. Too bad Ms. Sally was having ulcer so the rest of us got to eat more!

Squid Ink Risotto (Primi RM 22, Secondi RM 36)
We ordered the Secondi for sharing. It was decent but nowhere near satisfying, the squid ink simply gives the color but no texture and the rice isn't firm enough. The prawns are also a put off just like the seafood platter.

Wagyu Strip Loin (Marbling Grade-7), 200g with Foie Gras (70g) add on (RM 148 + RM 50)
As the previous few dishes turned out to be disappointing, we were hoping the next dish, Wagyu Strip Loin Steak, will make up for it. Unfortunately it turned out to be another disappointment. Though it is well grilled to Medium doness, it's simply lacking in flavor. It could be the seasoning but I suspect it's the quality of the meat. Another aspect of it that got us wondering is that, why is it served with soy sauce and wasabi on the side?!

Mr. Harrison had only one word for this. Boring. And we agreed no less. The Foie Gras however, turned out to be crispy on the outside and tender inside, satisfyingly seasoned as well. The only complain was that the portion was too small.

Finally, the desserts:

Creme Brulee (RM 18)
Creme Brulee is always my favorite, and the one they serves in Opus Bistro is no exception. It was very smooth in texture and decently sweet. The downside of it is that the presentation of the food is not impressive as you can see in the photo(yes, no one has touch it yet when the photo is taken) and the caramel is not crispy at all, it's more like a layer of gravy.

Opus' Special Tiramisu (RM16)
Naming it the Special really doesn't cut it for this dessert. It was lacking in the alcohol flavor and rather flat overall. I can find a much better Tiramisu with a lower price easily.

It appeared that Opus Bistro was not doing very well with their food and desserts. Their services however was quite attentive, suggestive and polite. We also appreciate the wine suggestions that they provided.

Ambiance wise, apart from the interior design I have to compliment their selections of music! They are mostly romantic and relaxing songs such as the 90s, old school and jazz. We enjoyed throughout the night despite of the disappointing food as the music kept us company.

This place is highly recommended for couples, if you're still looking for a place to celebrate the coming Valentine's Day, this is probably one of the restaurant you should consider. As for the food lovers, you can give it a go but don't expect too much from their food.

*Friendly Reminder: the restaurant is a quite cold so you might want to prepare something for that, especially the ladies.
